New Residence, Completed 2024
Awabakal Country, Tighes Hill NSW

Throsby House is a reinterpretation of the cottages which define this neighbourhood’s established character, with exaggerated weatherboards stacked into a familiar but novel stratum on the site. In comparison to the existing cottages however, this project reappraises its connection to the site and aspect: opening up and stretching out at the rear to the northern sun and Throsby Creek mangroves.

The extrusion of the house along the length of the site and the generous northern set-back allow for cross-ventilation, passive solar control and the opportunity for protected outdoor areas that provide the flexibility for an open plan defined by the patterns of seasonal living. Taking advantage of a sharp change in level, the ground-floor and garden is a storey below the street, contributing to a sense of privacy and retreat from the public realm for daily family life. The flood-controlled lot defines an elevated podium on this ground-floor as an anchor in the landscape, and the refined thresholds of large sliding timber doors, when opened, provide an uncompromised connection between the inside and out.
