Alterations and Additions, Completed 2024
Awabakal Country, Maryville NSW

Weatherboard cottages, a defining feature of Australia’s architectural history, are characterised by their timber cladding, gable roofs, and simple, functional layouts. These cottages, often built in the late 19th to early 20th centuries, reflect the working-class roots of many suburban and rural areas, offering practical solutions for family living. They have become a beloved part of the Australian landscape, with their unadorned charm and enduring appeal.

Tangerine House celebrates this classic cottage style, with additions respecting the traditional influences, yet adapting to meet the needs of a young family. The augmentations facilitate joyful living and create spaces attuned to the rhythms of daily life. The classic cottage layout is maintained, with additional spaces designed to enhance connectivity to the North-facing backyard, creating a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces. Seasonal calibration, the patterns of sun and moon, and family rituals like meals, coffee, and bathing are woven into the design to foster joy and calm. The use of apertures, coloured windows, and reflective screens choreographs moments of connection, ensuring each space brings a sense of serenity or delight.

As a flood affected site, the allowable building footprint was restricted, necessitating preservation of the existing footprint, with only a modest addition and new building fabric. The sympathetic addition included a kitchen, dining area, bathroom, toilet downstairs, with a bedroom and ensuite above. By maintaining the integrity of the original footprint and incorporating thoughtful additions, this project bridges the gap between the past and the present, celebrating both heritage and contemporary living.

Materials draw from traditional weatherboard cottages but are elevated with craft and consideration, blending heritage with elegance, making Tangerine House a vibrant reflection of family life.
