Alterations and Additions, Completed 2018
Awabakal Country, Islington NSW
The project presents as a typical alterations and additions: a new lean-to at the rear of an existing dwelling with a connection to the cricket oval and a space for long summer afternoons sitting, listening and relaxing.
The form juxtaposes the proportion and symmetry of the existing dwelling, creating a familiar yet uncanny addition that addresses the site's unusual condition surrounded by a park, facing south and views into the western sun.
Gestures are prioritised and a diagram begins to emerge. A roof pops up over the kitchen to capture northern light and a window seat engages with the street. The deck is over-proportioned against the rest of the addition to capture light, frame views to the park and protect from the western sun. This exaggerated threshold brings the garden into the house and provides a layer of privacy from the very public park.
