Sustainability should not be special or luxurious. It should form part of our day-to-day living habits and our homes should reflect this. We believe that living closer together, building smaller houses, reusing existing housing and connecting with the outdoors are the best strategies to approach sustainable development with.
Individually, the dwellings of House 186.3 apply basic sustainablilty principles such as use of recycled materials, passive solar design, flexible programming and integrated landscapes to great effect. It demonstrates effective sustainability principles are not expensive or difficult to achieve and are applicable to all development.
House 186.3 is replicable and stands as a highly visible model of responsible development in the Lake Macquarie area. How we adapt the houses we already have remains the biggest challenge to sustainable architecture, a challenge perhaps best solved with a little creativity.
