Multiple Housing, In Development
Awabakal Country, Newcastle East NSW
Curious Practice are part of the competition winning scheme for the final stages (3 and 4) of the Newcastle East End Renewal Project, created with the collaborative architectural team of SJB and Durbach Block Jaggers, with landscaping by COLA Studio.
Our building, Portline, develops a new narrative for the site whilst preserving the existing buildings, maintaining their stories and continuing their contribution to place. The existing buildings retain important character and fine-grained diversity that contributes to the overall experience of Newcastle. Subtle references in the new buildings are developed from the civic qualities of the Victorian-era buildings along Hunter Street.
Portline responds to the scale, proportion, vertical structural expression, celebrated corners and decorated parapet features of Newcastle's built heritage. These elements are integrated into the design in a way that integrates with knowledge the environmental qualities and atmosphere of place. The fabric of the building is recessed beyond expressed structure and slab edges, creating deep verandahs which offer flexible living while controlling the sun, privacy and views.
