Regent St Childcare
Regent Street is a small 24 space child care centre in a former suburban printing factory.
The existing factory envelope is maintained and a central courtyard is created by removing sections of the existing roof. A central semi-enclosed outdoor play area allows greater supervision of children from surrounding indoor play and administration areas, contrary to typical stacked planning layouts where administration and outdoor play areas are separated by indoor play areas.
The edges of the building have be altered to provide window-like openings to vegetated boundary setbacks and the sky. This provides greater sun penetration and ventilation for a healthy environment that encourages play. Strategies were developed to reduce impact of visual and acoustic amenity of neighbours.
The internal alterations to the existing factory allow a domestic scale building to emerge that is practical while encouraging children’s creativity. The exterior treatment celebrates the site’s past industrial use in a suburban context.
