Build a house in Merewether and if you’re lucky you might capture the view. Hill Street, as its name suggests, occupies an elevated slope in Merewether where every house fights for the views of ocean, horizon and city.
This family home investigated complying development controls to maximise the site’s potential for capturing these views. The house stretches thin, extending out along the southern boundary to do so. This provides a large exposed northern facade allowing ventilation and sun deep into the building. The setback allows full height glazing and together with the narrow floor plate, even from the deepest part of the house, the view is unobstructed. Windows are framed to bring views into focus. Vertical window elements are used to frame the horizon, their shape and scale adjusting to best capture the outlook.
The design takes advantage of pre-existing retaining walls to reduce the impact of further excavation and create a barrier free environment to further emphasise the horizon.
